Venus Williams is coming off a straight sets win over Yaroslava Shvedova that took over an hour and a half. In the victory, Venus won 36 of 51 first serve points and racked up 15 winners and 12 unforced errors. Venus is coming off her best performance yet in which she limited her unforced errors and won 71 percent of her first serve points. Even at 36 years old, Venus is still a very dangerous player when she’s not beating herself, and she’s produced just 32 unforced errors in her last two matches and has won her last five sets. Venus hopes to make her first grand slam final since the 2009 Wimbledon. Venus has won 10 of her last 12 matches on grass.
Angelique Kerber is coming off a straight sets win over Simona Halep that took exactly an hour and a half. In the victory, Kerber won 27 of 47 first serve points and racked up 23 winners and 21 unforced errors. Kerber has not dropped a single set this tournament and has produced 56 winners in her last three matches. Kerber isn’t coming off a great performance in the quarters due to an inconsistent first serve, but she’s making the shots when needed most and playing impressive defense. Kerber hopes to make her second career grand slam final. Kerber has won seven of her last eight matches on grass.
These two have met five times in the past and Kerber has won three of those meetings. The most recent match was in the 2014 Canadian Masters, a match Venus won in three sets. The other matches took place in 2012 or earlier, and this will be the second match on grass.
This is a complete toss-up for me, as you can’t put anything past Venus when she’s playing well. However, Kerber is the quicker, more athletic and has the advantage in the power department over the older Venus. You have to give Kerber the edge even if a Serena - Venus Wimbledon final would be fun to watch.
I have to side with Kerber to get the victory.
